MALONE, N.Y. — Simon Belzile continued his early season hot streak Sunday,
winning two Pro class finals as Rock Maple Racing made a highly-successful
debut at the Franklin County Fairgrounds. The inaugural Northeast Snocross
Championships were presented by the Malone Chamber of Commerce, and drew
some 9,500 spectators over the weekend.
Despite a persistent drizzle and unseasonable temperatures, over 4,000 fans
attended qualifying races on Saturday. Due to the inclement weather a few
heats had to be postponed until Sunday morning, yet the day was filled with
heated battles in several divisions.
Belzile just may have made it a clean sweep in the Pro ranks on Sunday, had
it not been for a broken drive chain in the Pro 600 final. Poirier, of
Valcourt, Quebec, capitalized on the misfortune and posted the win, followed
by Matt Boron and Jason Boron, both on Polaris. Matt also posted a third
place finish behind Belzile and Poirier in Pro 440, while Jason also
recorded a third place finish in the Pro Open class.
In Semi-Pro competition at Malone, Jeff Arsenault gave Xtreme Racing another
victory by holding off Dale Petrus and Shawn Nutt in Semi-Pro 440. Tyler
Webster earned a win in Semi-Pro 600 over N.Y. drivers Ed Hawkins and Matt
Rudd. Nutt recorded a win in Semi-Pro Open by besting Arsenault and Webster
in a hotly-contested final.
One of the highlights of the weekend came when Arsenault drove from his
back-row starting position all the way to a respectable fourth-place finish
in Semi-Pro 600. The Vermont native is determined to rule Semi-Pro this
year, and has the equipment and talent to do so.
In the always exciting Pro Vet class, Dave Stevenson picked up the win over
Glen Babineau and Dan Callahan. These drivers may be older than the “young
guns” in Pro class racing today, yet race every bit as hard and have the
experience to draw from on race day.
The Malone Chamber of Commerce put in a great deal of effort to make this
inaugural snocross event a success, and from all viewpoints enjoyed a
tremendous response. Franklin County is deep in the heart of New York’s
scenic Adirondack Mountain region, known for its snowmobiling and warm
hospitality. Area enthusiasts were eager to have sanctioned snocross racing
in their area, then responded in numbers when the competitors rolled in.
Rock Maple Racing, its many sponsors and racers would like to thank the
members of the Malone Chamber, area merchants and the wonderful New York
fans for an incredible debut. We hope you felt the response made it all
worthwhile and enjoyed racing in Franklin County.
